THREE SHOCKING THINGS ABOUT COACHING

When I first started seeing a life coach, I had a fairly good idea of what was involved. But, there were things that surprised me about it - and as I continued my journey, my eyes were opened to what it's really about. I wanted to share the top three things that shocked me about Life Coaching…

IT’S A PARTNERSHIP

Coaching is not a teacher/pupil type relationship. My coach was (and still is!) one of my biggest advocates. We worked together to make my life better, and I was never spoken down to. We were a team, she had my back. On the flip side, this meant I had to take on the responsibility of doing the work between sessions, too. It’s a two-way street - it was up to me, not my coach, to change my life. She supported and guided me, asked the best questions, gave me the tools…..but I had to go out and do the work.

COACHES WON’T TELL YOU WHAT TO DO

…Or give you all the answers (spoiler - they don't have them). Wait, what? They don't have all the answers?! So, who does? Um, that would be you. A coach will pull the answers from you with the right questions. I had the answers all along - she just knew the best questions to ask and held the space for me to figure it all out. I wasn’t given instructions on how to improve my life and find my purpose, but we sure as hell delved deep and created an action plan for me to do the thing. And, it worked!

IT’S NOT JUST FOR RICH PEOPLE

Wrong again. One of the reasons I didn't take the plunge for so long was the good old chestnut 'I can't afford it'. How many times have you said it - out loud or to yourself? I pondered on the question: What is more expensive, ‘I did’, or ‘I wish’ at the end of my life? Turns out, changing my life by putting myself first was something I could afford, after all.

I prioritised money for coaching over getting my nails done, buying clothes, the daily caffeine supply. I found ways to source the money. I'm absolutely not suggesting you forgo paying the rent to work with a coach - but for many of us, there are things we can drop for a few months for something that will positively impact our lives forever.

Any of these resonating with you? If you've had coaching, what surprised you about it?
